Journal Register Company Names Rick Thomason Editor of Register Citizen

Yardley, PA – Journal Register Company, a leading local news and information company, announced today the appointment of Rick Thomason as editor of The Register Citizen in Torrington, Conn.
Mr. Thomason, 53, began his career as a reporter for The Dothan Progress in Dothan, Alabama and has served as publisher The Delta Democrat-Times in Mississippi, The Destin Log and The Walton Sun in Florida. During his 29-year career Mr. Thomason has also worked as an editor at The Walton Sun and The Free Press in Florida and North Carolina respectively.
“Our open newsroom in Torrington is about partnering with our audience and finding partnerships that help us improve our coverage of our communities and Rick understands this,” said Matt DeRienzo, publisher of The Register Citizen. “Rick has an intense passion for local news and he understands the importance of local journalism and that we must be responsive to the needs of the communities.”
The Register Citizen was recently named the first-ever Innovator of the Month by the Associated Press Managing Editors for their Open Newsroom which features a Newsroom Café, free WiFi, open archives, a community meeting space and classroom, and workstations for members of the Community Media Lab.
“The community involvement in The Register Citizen’s open newsroom is what drew me to this job. The Register Citizen’s local focus is the future of journalism and our communities need strong, sustainable news sources. It’s our job to make sure Torrington – and all of Litchfield County – has this,” Mr. Thomason said.
